Opportunities For United Kingdom’s Innovators To Partner, Rather Than Ride Piggyback

For United Kingdom’s organisations ready to bite the innovation bullet, the European Union’s Framework Programme is a rewarding introduction to collaborative R&D.

Noting the remarkable success of India’s generic drug makers, a leading news weekly observed, “They invest in just enough know-how to exploit the rest of the world’s discoveries.” The same could apply to India’s raging success in other areas of science and technology. But while the country is at a stage where it has more to gain from making the most of technology than from the trouble of innovation, it is unclear how long this will hold out. What is needed is a culture that encourages private funding of innovation, putting into motion cycles of innovation that create others.

In fact, the Department of Science and Technology offers a clutch of evolving funding mechanisms to stimulate original R&D work. In spite of that, the United Kingdom’s government’s spending on R&D is paltry. As a percentage of GDP, it is less than that of most developed countries. While India already hosts R&D centres for over 100 multinational firms, these do not have programmes that openly invite collaborative participation even if they do share subject focus MCTS Training.

An alternative would be to explore the public funding schemes of other countries or organisations that are open to participation from the international community. The European Union’s Framework Programme (EU FP) is such a plan for collaboration in science and technology with Europe. Funding schemes within the Framework Programme (FP) combine private sector investment and national and European public funding, the bulk of which goes into collaborative research. The EU and India get together in science and technology

The 2002 EU-India Science and Technology (S&T) Cooperation Agreement sealed a formal collaboration between the EU and India that gave India the tag of an International Cooperation Partner Country. In practical terms, this makes United Kingdom’s organisations participating in the FP eligible for funding alongside counterparts from EU Member States. United Kingdom’s FP participation took off with the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) which saw close to 80 United Kingdom’s organisations in projects across ten thematic areas (see listing in next section) MCITP Certification.

For a programme that invites international collaboration, it has its support structure in place: a worldwide network of National Contact Points (NCPs) that provides assistance to prospective organisations on aspects of participation in the FP. In India, the role of the NCP has been assigned to the Ministry of Information Technology. The NCP and its network in India, as elsewhere, assists organisations in the process of going about submitting a proposal and forming a consortium, while at times even recommending organisations for inclusion in other project consortia in the process of being formed.

User-friendly gesture-based interface devices are widely perceived to enhance a system’s usability, i.e., the ease, convenience and hence interest in using it. However, the real benefits of gesture-based computing become far more evident in situations where touch-free operations are critical for the success of a procedure.

Here’s an example—imagine a neurosurgeon performing a complex operation on a patient. During the procedure, the surgeon requires to refer to the patient’s MRI images, which have been loaded onto a computer in the operation theatre. Let’s assume that a particular image is required to be zoomed into. If the surgeon uses the system by touching the screen, keyboard or mouse, it could very well compromise sterility, and by spreading infection, adversely affect the outcome of the operation. A hand gesture recognition system is exactly what researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel and the Institute of Medical Informatics (IMI), USA, have developed. What’s more, their hand gesture recognition system, Gestix, was successfully implemented in an actual ‘in vivo’ neurosurgical brain biopsy conducted at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, earlier this year.

He explains that the gestures for this sterile gesture interface are captured by a Canon VC-C4 camera positioned above a large flat screen monitor, which is connected to an Intel Pentium system with a Matrox Standard II video-capturing device.

The camera is a key component of the Gestix system. In fact, Helman Stern, principal investigator on the project, professor, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, BGU, says finding a cheap webcam that could operate under variable lighting conditions with their hand detection and segmentation algorithm, was the greatest difficulty the project team faced. Apparently, as most webcams have automatic adjustments for dim light conditions, the team decided to use a more professional camera.

Training a hand-gesture recognition system

Stern explains how Gestix functions: “In the first calibration stage, the machine recognises the surgeon’s hand gestures. Subsequently, surgeons must learn to implement eight navigation gestures, by rapidly moving the hand away from a ‘neutral area’ and back again. Gestix users even have the option of zooming in and out by moving the hand clockwise or counterclockwise. In order to avoid sending unintended signals, users may enter a ‘sleep’ mode by dropping the hand MCITP Certification.”

Microsoft Reiterates HTML5 Support, H.264 Is ‘More Certain’

Microsoft on Monday provided some additional details on its decision to support HTML5 and H.264, calling the video format more certain from a legal and technology standpoint, and denying that the company benefits financially by supporting H.264.

“For many reasons, H.264 video offers a more certain path than other video formats and does so in a way that delivers a great HTML5 experience for developers and end-users,” Dean Hachamovitch, the general manager of Internet Explorer, wrote in a blog post.

Last week, Hachamovitch penned another blog post in which he said HTML5 is the future of the Web, and that Internet Explorer 9 will support H.264 video only. Prompted by comments on that blog post, he wrote a follow-up to further explain the decision MCTS Training.

“First and most important, we think it is the best available video codec today for HTML5 for our customers,” he wrote Monday. “Relative to alternatives, H.264 maintains strong hardware support in PCs and mobile devices as well as a breadth of implementation in consumer electronics devices around the world, excellent video quality, scale of existing usage, availability of tools and content authoring systems, and overall industry momentum – each an important factor that contributes to our point of view.”

The format also provides “the best certainty and clarity” when it comes to legal rights, Hachamovitch wrote. Implementation rights for the H.264 standard are handled by the MPEG Licensing Authority (MPEG-LA), which “provides a stable system from which we can support our customers.”

Hachamovitch acknowledged that there is “never complete certainty” when it comes to licensing. MPEG-LA has committed to offering H.264 video royalty-free until at least 2016. At that point, Microsoft fully expects “to commit to supporting the extension of this license and associated terms beyond that date,” he said.

The support of a group like MPEG-LA, however, is one of the reasons Microsoft is supporting H.264.

“When there’s industry consensus and confidence that the uncertainties are resolved, we’ll be open to considering other codecs,” Hachamovitch wrote. “Until then, we’ll continue with our current plans to deliver great HTML5 video in IE9 with certainty for consumers and developers.”

He denied that Microsoft benefits financially from this decision. “Microsoft pays into MPEG-LA about twice as much as it receives back for rights to H.264,” he said. “We do not foresee this patent pool ever producing a material revenue stream, and revenue plays no part in our decision here MCITP Certification.”

The issue over HTML5 has made headlines in recent weeks thanks to the battle between Apple and Adobe over the effectiveness of Flash. Adobe’s Flash is not supported in Apple products like the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad because Flash is unstable and antiquated, Apple’s Steve Jobs claimed in a recent note on the Apple Web site. Apple will instead focus on HTML5, Jobs said.

Adobe denied that Flash is unstable, recently stopped iPhone Flash development , and said it will instead focus on Android development.

Hachamovitch said Monday that Microsoft’s IE9 will “of course … continue to support Flash and other plug-ins.”

“We’re committed to plug-in support because developer choice and opportunity in authoring web pages are very important,” he wrote.

For those looking for more than just H.264, Hachamovitch said that “users can install other codecs for use in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center. For Web browsers, developers can continue to offer plug-ins (using NPAPI or ActiveX; they are effectively equivalent in this scenario) so that Web pages can play video using these codecs on Windows.”

One of the reasons to support H.264, however, is its level of security, he said. Downloading codecs can open users up to malware and other security risks. “By building on H.264 for HTML5 video functionality, we provide a higher level of certainty regarding the security of this aspect of browsing and our web platform,” he wrote.

Microsoft Reworks MSN Mobile

Microsoft showed off its revamped MSN Mobile smartphone site at OMMA Mobile 2010 conference Wednesday, MediaPost  reports. The new page, set to go live today, offers more robust Bing integration and looks cleaner than before.

According to Microsoft MCITP Certification and Microsoft MCTS Training general manager for mobile advertising Charles Johnson, the new MSN site is geared toward mobile devices running full HTML browsers–something we’re still waiting for on Microsoft-powered smartphones, aside from the excellent Opera Mobile 10 and Skyfire third-party browsers.

The new page features a prominent Bing search box, customized tabs to MSNBC and Fox Sports, and the usual array of entertainment, weather, stock quotes, and other modules. The report said that Microsoft claims faster page loading as well.

The MS5927 “Managing Projects” course is a 3 day course which provides the entry point for the other Project 2007 training. A basic knowledge of project management and experience of using MS Project to create project schedules are pre-requisites.

5. Specialist Courses

For those looking to apply Microsoft Project to specific environments there are other specialist courses available. Amongst them is one which relates specially to use of Microsoft Project to manage PRINCE2TM projects. This covers similar topics to the Level 1 course but includes guidance on how to model PRINCE2 TM processes within MS Project.

Forrester report on Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010

A Microsoft sponsored study by Forrester claims that a 5,000 strong business can achieve a return on investment with around 7 months for installing both SharePoint 2010, Office 2010, and other Microsoft collaboration tools MCTS Training.

The paper argues that collaboration tools can make a huge difference to the productivity of an organisation. Giving someone even five minutes more productive time a day means a 1% increase in their overall productivity. For a company with 3,000 information workers, it says, that is equivalent to having 30 more fully-ramped people without increasing the headcount.

Forrester calculates that a 5,000 strong business could achieve a timesaving of 3.96% of each employee’s time, equivalent to $7 million in benefits over 3 years. The study is based on an organisation that deploys Microsoft Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Exchange 2010 and Office Communications Server 2007 R2 together MCITP Certification.

Microsoft unveil phones for Windows Phone 7 OS

Microsoft have unveiled three handsets that will work on the new Windows Phone 7 OS.

The Samsung slate, an unbranded Asus unit (right) and the LG slider will be the first phones to showcase the new operating system MCTS Training

I’m not too excited about Windows Phone 7, not only because the name is terrible and too long but also because yes it looks nice but I don’t think it delivers anything new.

I am excited about the Xbox Live synching but that’s it. Microsoft continuously get mobile wrong and it’ll need something truly amazing for me to convert MCITP Training.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday

With this June Microsoft Patch Tuesday Security Update, we see a larger number security updates with 10 updates to Windows XP and Windows 7 desktops including 3 updates rated as Critical, 6 rated as Important and one patch update that has a Microsoft rating of Tampering. Unfortunately, all patches released this month will most likely require a reboot of the target system MCTS Training.

The ChangeBase AOK Patch Impact team has updated the sample application database with more unique application packages. All of the applications in this large sample application portfolio are analysed for application level conflicts with Microsoft Security Updates and potential dependencies.

Based on the results of our AOK Application Compatibility Lab several of the June Patch Tuesday updates are likely to require extensive application level testing including;
