Nintendo Wii Sales Down 31.5 Percent from January 2010

January has just not been a pleasant month for video game sales. At least, that’s according to new numbers released by NPD. Total January 2011 sales for gaming accessories, portable systems, and games for PCs and consoles fell to $1.16 billion from last year’s total of $1.22 billion. And the $1.22 billion figure for January 2010 is itself a decrease from January 2009 figures, or $1.33 billion in total sales.

Breaking that number out a bit, hardware sales took the biggest year-to-year hit, dropping 8 percent from $353.7 million in January 2010 to $324 million in January 2011. NPD no longer splits this number out into publicly available data for the various console manufacturers; however, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that Microsoft was the only big player to experience year-to-year growth on hardware sales.

According to Pachter, Microsoft sold approximately 332,800 Xbox 360 units, representing a year-to-year growth of 14.4 percent for the company. More than half of the systems sold were also bundled with Microsoft’s Kinect accessory.

Nintendo, on the other hand, found its sales down 31.5 percent compared to the same period of time last year. That’s a drop from 465,800 Wii consoles sold in January 2010 to 319,000 sold in January 2011. The company still leads the current console market with 34.5 million Wii units sold in the U.S., in total, with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 coming in second place at 25.8 million, followed by Sony’s PlayStation 3 at 15.7 million.

The PlayStation 3 experienced slight drops in sales between January 2010 and January 2011, only losing 3 percent of its total between the two years—276,900 consoles sold in January 2010 versus 267,000 in 2011.

Overall software sales also took a hit between the two compared years, dropping off 5 percent in total sales from January 2010’s $606.8 million to January 2011’s $576 million. The top game (physical media only) remained Activision Blizzard’s “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” which debuted (and shot to the top of the charts) in November of last year.

Accessory sales for videogame consoles were the bright light in NPD’s monthly analysis. Sales increased a total of 8 percent from January 2010’s $222.8 million to January 2011’s $235.1 million. While there’s no official split as to how the two biggest contributors to this total fared—Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move—Pachter notes that Kinect-based software titles outsold similar Move-friendly titles for the PS3, and Microsoft’s console/accessory bundles outsold Sony’s by a ratio of five to one.

Egyptian Man Names Daughter ‘Facebook’

I suppose we’ll never see a MySpace Smith or a Quora Doe (unless it’s in a first-person sci-fi shooter on a gaming console), but Facebook can now add yet another “first” to its already impressive series of accomplishments: First child.

Facebook didn’t have a baby. Rather, the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram is reporting that 20-something Jamal Ibrahim has decided to name his daughter “Facebook” Jamal Ibrahim in honor of the service that helped anti-government protests overthrow Egyptian dictator Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak.

“The girl’s family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook,” reads an English translation of the paper as supplied by TechCrunch. “‘Facebook’ received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name-a name that shocked the entire world.”

Although Facebook wasn’t the only service in use by Egyptians during the roughly three weeks of protests within the country, it’s certainly the service that’s received the most widespread follow-up in the aftermath. Roughly 5 million of the country’s citizens have active Facebook accounts, and the company saw more than 32,000 different groups and 14,000 new pages pop up on the service within approximately the last two weeks of January.

And that even includes a new page for Egypt’s current ruling organization, the Supreme Council of the armed forces—launched, “as part of our belief that fruitful cooperation with Egyptian youth in the coming period will surely lead to the security and stability for our beloved Egypt,” said Field Marshal and interim Egyptian leader Hussein Tantawi.

We have yet to hear reports of anyone naming children “Twitter” in support of that service’s use during international protests. For what it’s worth, the aforementioned Supreme Council of the armed forces doesn’t even have its own Twitter page yet, let alone namesake.

During a keynote at Mobile World Congress, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said that focusing on whether Twitter, Facebook, or other social-networking services were responsible for the successful uprising in Egypt takes away from what the people in that region accomplished.

Who Owns Who in Tech

The tech industry is full of big brand names, but the business does not have as many independent players as it used to. Companies frequently gobble up smaller companies, creating larger conglomerates. So while you may see a bunch of different brands, they may have a lot more in common than you think (like their owners).

Why would a company feel the overwhelming urge to merge? A company may want to strengthen its place in the market, so it buys up the competition. The new combined company now has a lot more leverage when handling business negotiations and the like.

If a company wants to branch out beyond its core business, it has a couple of options. It can try to extend its brand to a new market and hope that, one day, the product beats out all of its competition. The other option is to acquire an established player in the field, which acts as a shortcut into a new market while eliminating a potential competitor.

Occasionally, you’ll see that a company only exists as little more than a label. Why do companies keep around these labels? There’s a lot of goodwill built into the names of companies and these labels can also help differentiate products. For example, a company may put different brand names on its budget, mainstream, and premium lines.

So, consumers may not even realize that another company owns their favorite brand. You may not even care, but just in case you’re curious (we are!), we’ve highlighted what we think are some of the most important acquisitions in the tech world.

Unwanted keyboard shortcut with dual monitors

Problem:
I have a computer setup with dual monitors (desktop extended). When I have a window open, e.g., Microsoft Word 2007, after I type “1” on the keyboard, the Word Window and mouse relocate to the second monitor. When I type “2” the Word window and mouse relocate to the main monitor. In the word document, 1 and 2 are typed in the document, but pushing the keys still move the window and mouse to the opposing monitor.
I checked the keyboard settings within Windows and found that sticky keys and such are not enabled. The keyboard has no such features to enable. I also checked the display setup in display properties and found nothing that would indicate such a setup. Google searches return nothing related to my problem.

What I do know:
-The rest of the numbers on the keyboard work fine. Pressing 1 and 2 on the number pad at the far right of the keyboard do not transfer the active window to the second monitor. Those keys work fine.

-The type of window does not matter. Using notepad, word, excel, internet explorer, sticky notes; all of those windows would transfer to the opposing monitor when I push 1 and 2.

Setup:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Dual-Monitor
Wireless Keyboard and mouse
