15 Top Paying Certifications for 2013

15 Top Paying Certifications for 2013
Randy Muller, Global Knowledge Instructor, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

Having earned an IT certification, many individuals think they are automatically entitled to a huge raise. The truth is that several factors, including geography, industry, experience, and yes, certifications, combine to play a major role in determining an individual’s salary. However, certain certifications do have greater impact on the earning potential of an individual. Here, we take a look at the 15 certifications with the highest earning potential for 2013.

Note: The rankings below are derived from certifications that received the minimum number of responses to be statistically relevant in the Global Knowledge annual salary survey completed in October 2012. Certain certifications pay more, but are not represented due to their exclusive nature. These include CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert and VCDX: VMware Certified Design Expert, for example.

1. PMP: Project Management Professional – $105,750
The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is recognized as the most important certification for project managers. It is globally acknowledged, in heavy demand, and highly sought after by corporations and individuals alike. A Project Management Professional designation demonstrates that you have not only the experience but also the education to successfully lead and direct projects. The PMP credential is for experienced project management professionals, as the qualifications and testing for this certification are rigorous, as are the required continuing education requirements. All of these factors ensure that the PMP credential is widely respected. The PMP experience and exam requirements focus on five process groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, and Closing.

2. CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional – $103,299
The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential is primarily intended for security managers and profes¬sionals who develop policies and procedures in information security. Currently, there are three separate certification tracks for those seeking to earn this certification: MCSD: Windows Store Apps, MCSD: Web Applications, and MCSD: Application Lifecycle Management. Each MCSD track requires anywhere from three to six separate exams. Microsoft has introduced a recertification requirement for the new MCSD. Current certification holders will have to recertify every two years, ensuring that they remain current on the base technology that will have changed due to service packs, revisions, and new product releases. (Those holding MCSE certifications will have to recertify every three years).

4. MCDBA: Microsoft Certified Database Administrator – $95,950

Access to information is critical in today’s fast-paced, global environment. Corporations are even more dependent on quick and reliable systems to process and retrieve information. Summary

Earning a certification does not guarantee that you will walk into a higher paying job. Certification counts, but employers look at several factors, including experience. There was a time when certification holders were reasonably assured of landing a job. Today it is more of a qualifier – not having a certification means you may not even get an interview.

Requirements of Becoming MCTS Certified

Requirements of Becoming MCTS Certified
The MCTS Training is one of the most popular certifications in the IT industry. Through this certification, IT professionals gain the ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Windows platforms and carefully configure, install, and maintain Microsoft operating systems. It is an accomplishment that is recognized throughout the IT industry.

In order to earn this certification, candidates are required to pass seven tests, or in other words gain seven different titles. There are four titles which deal specifically with networking; such exams are 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294. Through these exams IT professionals and MCTS students will be gain specialized training working with the Windows 2003 Server infrastructure.

The next portion of the core exams required deal specifically with operating systems. Microsoft offers a few different options to students to choose from; however only one is required. Tests 70-270 or 70-210 both deal with installing, configuring, and administering Microsoft operating systems; however 270 deals specifically with XP, while 210 works with Windows 2000.

The last portion of the core examinations focuses around design. Again, Microsoft offers two different options for students to choose from, but only one is required. The first is exam 70-297, which teaches students to design a Microsoft Windows server 2003 active directory. The other choice is exam 70-298, where students work more with designing security for the Windows server 2003
network.

Once the core exams are mastered, Microsoft requires one elective course. There are 17 different elective courses offered by Microsoft which can be selected; however it is only necessary to pass one. Microsoft reports that MCTS electives can also be substituted by other Microsoft certifications, such as MCSA 2000 or MCTS 2000. There are also some third party certifications which can serve this same purpose; however if this is something you are considering, follow up with the Microsoft website to double check.

Earning the MCTS certification will require a lot of work; however the benefits will be felt throughout your career as an IT professional. There are many different routes one can take in preparing for the MCTS certification, for example candidates can choose to attend boot camps, distance learning programs, or take a self-paced training program. If the MCITP certification is something which interests you and your career, Certkingdom has created a MCTS certification course to better prepare students through the use of multimedia technology and simulations. Become MCSA, A+, Server+, or CCNA certified and improve your career. Mike Allen writes about technical training for IT certifications.

Google Android overtakes Windows Mobile

Google Android overtakes Windows Mobile

Google’s Android has blown by Microsoft MCTS Training Windows Mobile to rank third among smartphone operating systems, according to ComScore’s latest numbers.

RIM and Apple remain No. 1 and 2 respectively, though both lost a little share between the May-June-July period and the February through April period as measured by ComScore. RIM has a 39.3% share (down 1.8%) of U.S. smartphone subscribers based on operating system and Apple boasts 23.8% (down 1.3%).

Android’s share jumped from 12% to 17%, buoyed by a slew of new devices. HTC gave Android another boost this week with the introduction of two new Desire smartphone models.

The ComScore findings come on the heels of Gartner projecting that Android by year-end will be No. 2 worldwide only to Nokia’s Symbian and separately, new Nielsen numbers show Android devices last quarter outsold iPhone devices for the first time.

New numbers from Google show that customers are increasingly buying devices with its newest version of Android, dubbed Froyo, a sign that fragmentation of the Android market might lessen.

(As a reality check, not all numbers are going Android’s way: Computerworld’s Gregg Keizer reported last week that one measurement company showed Apple iOS beats Android 6-to-1 worldwide in market share.)

The expected arrival of Windows Phone 7, on Oct. 11 can’t come soon enough for Microsoft MCITP Certification, which saw its share fall from 14% to 11.8%.

Despite share drops by Microsoft and the others, ComScore does note that the overall market keeps growing, with 53.4 million people in the U.S. owning smartphones during the measurement period.

Mobile content usage is also on the rise, with ComScore showing increases in text messaging, downloaded apps and social networks accessed by smartphone users.

Samsung, LG, Motorola, RIM and Nokia were the leading mobile OEMs during the three-month period measured by ComScore, in that order, as was the case in the three months before.

Microsoft’s big Bing theory targets Google

Microsoft’s big Bing theory targets Google

With Microsoft and Yahoo officially teaming up in the search market this week, it’s time to wait and see if this move could eat into Google ‘s hearty lead over its top opponents.

Microsoft and Yahoo announced Tuesday that Bing is totally fueling Yahoo search results in the U.S. and Canada. The search integration comes more than a year after both companies announced that they were joining forces to better take on Google, the goliath of the search industry.
The Value of PC Refresh with Microsoft MCTS Training Windows 7: Download now

It will be a while before there are any numbers to show how the pair is fairing against Google , said Hadley Reynolds, an analyst at market research firm IDC. However he said the launch was a positive start.

“It’s important for Microsoft and Yahoo that the shift from Yahoo search to Bing for organic results took place smoothly this week — apparently without any technical breakdowns,” Reynolds said. “These transitions are dicey in any software environment, and the fact that Yahoo and Bing pulled off the project successfully should build confidence among search marketers and advertisers.”

With the 10-year deal, Yahoo gave up its own longstanding search technology in lieu of using Microsoft’s fairly new Bing search engine to power all searches on the various Yahoo sites.

Both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission approved the search agreement earlier this year.

This week’s announcement marks a first step in putting the agreement into action. Satya Nadella, a senior vice president at Microsoft, noted in a blog post that at this point, Bing is only powering results in English in the U.S. and Canada. The setup is expected to expand into other languages and regions in coming months.

Yahoo users should expect to see few, if any, differences in their searches. What could change is the level of competition that Google faces.

“With Yahoo’s moving their volume of search users to Bing, it makes it a much more level playing field for Bing vs. Google ,” said Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group. “While the combined Microsoft and Yahoo search traffic is still significantly lower than what Google drives, it’s much larger than the two had on their own. This gives Bing better numbers to show advertisers and a chance to cut into Google’s lead.”

Neither Bing nor Yahoo separately has had any luck cutting into Google’s lead in the search market. Google captured 65.8% of the search market in July, according to market research company ComScore. Yahoo had 17.1% and Bing had 11%, ComScore reported.

The plan, then was for Bing and Yahoo to hitch their teams together and to make a reinforced assault on Google’s gates.

“This probably saved Yahoo, who, without the removal of the cost related to search and the influx of Microsoft revenue, would likely be gone by now,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group. “For Microsoft MCITP Certification, it puts them in the search game but by creating a stronger competitor…. The onslaught against Google began when Microsoft basically wrote a blank check to Yahoo to fund the battle. But this [week’s integration] will represent the biggest win Microsoft ever got in one move.”

The HP/Dell bidding war over storage vendor 3Par is shaping up to be a repeat of last year’s high-profile battle between EMC and NetApp.

In May 2009 NetApp triumphantly announced a $1.5 billion deal to purchase Data Domain, but was quickly outbid by EMC. Although NetApp raised its bid to $1.9 billion, EMC eventually won the seven-week bidding war with a $2.1 billion offer that provided a key victory over its smaller rival.

Fast forward to August 2010, and HP has offered $1.6 billion to purchase 3Par, topping Dell’s bid of $1.15 billion. If the HP/Dell contest follows the same pattern, Dell will soon raise the bid closer to $2 billion. (See also: Five technology bidding wars preceding EMC vs. NetApp.)

“The strategic value of 3Par to Dell is such that it wouldn’t surprise me to see Dell come back with a counteroffer,” says Pund-IT analyst Charles King. “3Par is going to go to whichever company has the stomach to stick with the bidding.”

Like EMC, HP is trying to push around a smaller competitor. HP reported more than $30 billion of revenue in the most recent quarter, compared to $15.5 billion for Dell. But while the HP/Dell situation is similar to the EMC/NetApp bidding war of 2009, there are some key differences.

At the time of the Data Domain bidding war, EMC reportedly had $7 billion in cash reserves, compared to $2.7 billion for NetApp. According to YCharts, HP has $14.17 billion cash on hand, compared to Dell’s $10.88 billion Microsoft MCTS Training.

While HP clearly has more money to spare in the contest for 3Par, Dell has a much larger cushion than NetApp did when it was pursuing Data Domain.

HP is also in a precarious position with shareholders, partly due to CEO Mark Hurd being forced out of the company in the wake of sexual harassment accusations.

“If HP pushes this too far, they’re going to have to come up with some very solid justification,” King says. “3Par is a highly innovative company, but this is still a fairly young market. The payoff is further down the road than a deal for a well-known entity like, say, NetApp would be.”

But even if one assumes that Dell is in a better position vs. HP than NetApp was vs. EMC, there is still at least one other consideration: 3Par isn’t the only option for either HP or Dell.

EMC and NetApp seemed to believe that Data Domain was far and away the best option in the data de-duplication market. 3Par is attractive to HP and Dell because of its thin provisioning and virtualized storage technology. But there are other vendors offering cloud-centric, highly virtualized storage systems (Isilon and Compellent are two examples).

Thus, if either HP or Dell believes the price for 3Par is too high, they may be less gung ho than EMC and NetApp were over Data Domain because they have other options Microsoft MCITP Certification.

“There are other companies in this space,” King says. “3Par wasn’t alone.”
