Microsoft New Certifications for Desktop Support

Microsoft New Certifications for Desktop Support

With the launch of the it’s next generation certifications and the Vista Operating System, Microsoft has begun what may become the gradual phase-out of the popular MCDST Training Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician certification, although no exams have been slated for retirement yet.

Two new MCITP certification tracks specifically for Desktop Support on Windows Vista are now available. The MCITP Enterprise Support (Desktop Support for large organizations) and MCITP Consumer Support (Desktop Support for small-to-mid size organizations) each consist of two exams. Exam 70-620: TS-Windows Vista Configuring is part of both curriculums. 70-622: PRO: Supporting and Troubleshooting Applications on a Windows Vista Client for Enterprise Support Technicians makes up the second exam for the MCITP Enterprise Support curriculum while 70-623: PRO: Supporting and Troubleshooting Applications on a Windows Vista Client for Consumer Support Technicians is the second exam in the MCITP Consumer Support Curriculum.

Is your company currently still running the XP Operating System? Then the MCDST certification is still viable and may be your best option. When your company converts to Vista, there is a single upgrade exam for people holding the MCDST credential to upgrade to MCITP Enterprise Support- Exam 70-621: PRO: UPGRADE: Upgrading Your MCDST Certification to MCITP Training Enterprise Support.

To make themselves additionally valuable to employers and stay ahead of the knowledge curve on Vista, Desktop Support Professionals can take both the MCTS Training and then the MCITP Enterprise Support upgrade exam after receiving their MCDST certification.

Windows Server 2003 MCSA, MCSE or Windows Server 2008 MCTS

Windows Server 2003 MCSA, MCSE or Windows Server 2008 MCTS
One of my Friend – Nattily – has asked me a question which I am regularly asked, so I have posted it and my reply in this post.

“I am confused as to which Microsoft certification to study for – My company is running Windows Server 2000 and 2003. Should I continue to look at obtaining the MCSE or restart my studies on Windows Server 2008? If I study for Windows Server 2008 what exams must I study for?”

Firstly there will be no MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) or MCSE Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) on Windows Server 2008, these qualifications are currently only available with Windows Server 2003 and will be replaced by the new qualifications – MCTS (Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist) and MCTS Training (Microsoft Certified IT Professional).

NOTE: Once you are an MCSA or MCSE you will NOT LOSE your Certification
For those of you considering whether to continue with your studies on Windows Server 2003 or start afresh on Windows Server 2008 I have tried to outline the available certification tracks below. My advise is studying for the MCSA or MCSE 2003 Training will provide you with skills to help you in most existing working environments and give you a sound foundation, as well as an upgrade route to Windows Server 2008 when implemented in the future by companies.

The Windows Server 2008 MCTS Certifications include:
* 70-640 – Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory
* 70-642 – Configuring Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure
* 70-643 – Configuring Windows Server 2008 Application Platforms. (This will cover Internet Information Services (IIS 7) and Microsoft Virtual Server)

For an MCSA already qualified on Windows 2003 ( One upgrade exam is needed )

* 70-648 – TS: Upgrading your MCSA on Windows Server 2003 to MCTS on Windows Server 2008.

NOTE: You will therefore NOT have to pass MCTS exams 70-640 and 70-642
For an MCSE already qualified on Windows 2003 ( One upgrade exam is needed)

* 70-649 – TS: Upgrading your MCSE on Windows Server 2003 to MCTS on Windows Server 2008

NOTE: You will therefore NOT have to pass MCTS exams 70-640, 70-642 and 70-643.

The Server 2008 MCITP Certifications include:
* The Windows Server 2008 Administrator:

Only 3 exams required:  MCITP Certification 70-640, 70-642 plus:
* 70-646 – Windows 2008 Server Administrator Exam
* Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Administrator:

5 exams required: MCTS certifications 70-640, 70-642, 70-643, 70-620 on Windows Vista, Configuration, plus

Introduction to MCSE 70-293 Exam

The best introduction to the MCSE 70-293 exam would be “Expect the Unexpected”. If you have read the contents of the official curriculum for the course 2278, and think that you can take the exam any time now be prepared for a roller coaster ride. This is one exam that states no specific prerequisite but encompasses all the other core objectives partially or wholly within the “unsaid” prerequisites.

Be it IP addressing schemes, DNS or DHCP infrastructure, Certificate Authority hierarchy, Group Policy, IPSec Infrastructure, Network load balancing, or clustering, you name it – there it is.

Do you still think you are prepared for MCTS Training 70-293? Then GO FOR IT!!!

Well, if you are now apprehensive about the exam, you have reasons to be. Not to worry though, read on to see how you can master the art of a Pass score in the exam! It is not all that tough once you know how to!

What all does MCSE 70-293 Exam test?
This exam, in terms of content, will be a little more extensive than the exam 70-291. 70-291 dealt with the typical network infrastructure requirements for Windows Server 2003 and its implementation and management.

MCSE 70-293 exam will test you on planning the Windows Server 2003 network and securing it along with all that of 70-291 and more.

This exam is more about Enterprise networks, what their network infrastructure ought to be, and smart ways of deploying and optimizing them, Enterprise security, Server roles, and securing servers too. Last but not the least, there is a fair amount of emphasis on server health and monitoring. Of course, it is obvious that there cannot be enough security for any service if there isn’t enough internal monitoring on its status!

MCSE 70-293 exam is also about presenting all the above-mentioned topics in as many complicated scenarios as possible. Here you will not get many breathers of straightforward Multiple Choice Single Response (MCSR) questions in-between scenarios, because the MCSR questions in this exam either relate to some configuration parameter or a simpler scenario when compared to the Multiple Choice Multiple Response (MCMR) questions. By the end of the exam, you may be so tired after analyzing 30 different scenarios that you will be longing for those refreshing MCSR type of questions.

There are quite a few exhibit related, drag and drop, Hot area, and Multiple Choice Multiple Response (MCMR) questions. The best way to deal with them, if you are not too confident, is to use the trick of elimination. In the MCMR, first do away with the wrong answers and filter down to few answers that may be correct. To choose the best among those few correct answers, re-read the scenario and relate the scenario to those correct answers, it will help you consolidate on the exact best choice.

If you are not very comfortable with planning, design, deployment, and securing the Windows Server 2003 networks, I suggest you wait a bit and work hard to prepare yourself, before investing your time and money in this exam. It is not meant for inexperienced candidates aiming at it only as a certification. It is for serious professionals who have been working on mid-size to Enterprise size networks for at least a year.

If you do not have the required prerequisite Microsoft MCITP Certification you can always make up for it with a lot of reading, hands-on experience, and training. You can get hands-on experience with latest set of questions in our Preparation Kit and plan your study regime to ensure success.
