We make more money on cloud-based Exchange than legacy email

Per-user income greater in cloud, or so Microsoft claims

microsoft Claims it earns more money per user from cloud-based Exchange email accounts than it does selling the legacy version of Exchange Server most businesses deploy today.

That’s what Microsoft investor relations GM Bill Koefoed said at the Oppenheimer Annual Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference Tuesday, according to a transcript on Microsoft’s website. Customers who purchase Exchange as part of the Office 365 cloud service pay roughly $10 per month, less than they would in the back-end costs of running their own Exchange servers, but nearly all of of it goes directly to Microsoft, he said.

Hosted productivity suites: Google Apps or Microsoft Office 365?

That doesn’t mean Microsoft actually makes more money in the cloud than it does with its traditional business of selling software licenses. For one thing, Microsoft’s cloud customer base is mostly small businesses. To gain the kind of per-user profits Koefoed is talking about, Microsoft needs Office 365 to lure in big enterprises.

“Within an enterprise, let’s say it costs $15 per user per month today to run Exchange, and that’s about $2 for Microsoft, and that’s $13 in rent, power, the data base administrator that’s running the thing, the hardware and all the kind of services that are associated with kind of running Exchange in your premise,” Koefoed said.

“With Office 365, or with Exchange Online, the Exchange part of that, we charge $10 per user per month,” he continued. “So, that ends up being a savings to the CIO of roughly 33%, and we make 5X more revenue and our profit ends up being somewhere, $3 or $4 per user per month. So, we make more revenue and we make more profit and we save our customers money.”

The profit ends up being $3 or $4 per user per month because it costs Microsoft $6 or $7 per user to run the data centers powering the cloud service. “We can do that at scale,” Koefoed noted. “Interestingly, one of the things that we’ve learned in our search business is how to run data centers at scale.”

Koefoed gave the example in response to investors’ questions about how Microsoft’s revenue in the cloud compares to its traditional business model of selling software licenses. The popularity of Google Apps with small businesses is among the factors that forced Microsoft to expand its Web-based offerings, but investors are likely concerned these offerings will cannibalize Microsoft’s existing revenue streams.

Koefoed’s example leaves out the fact that Office 365 is appealing mostly to smaller businesses with few users. The small business version of Office 365, which includes Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and Office Web Apps, costs only $6 per user per month. An actual Exchange Server license, meanwhile, costs $700 for a standard edition and $4,000 for an enterprise edition, plus extra charges for client access licenses.

Enterprises can lessen the financial hit because of their scale, making the economics of running their own servers worthwhile for the customer, which is why Koefoed can say enterprises pay Microsoft only $2 per user per month to run Exchange. For small customers, the per-user cost of running Exchange Server without a cloud subscription would be higher, and therefore more profitable for Microsoft. Whether Microsoft actually makes more per-user profit from cloud services than packaged software is therefore questionable.

System Center Orchestrator 2012 – what’s changing?

OIS 6.3 is repackaged and given a facelift but remains fundamentally the same.

By Kerrie Meyler and Pete Zerger.  Now that System Center Orchestrator 2012 is available in beta, you may be wondering if it is worthwhile to continue creating policies with Opalis Integration Server (OIS) 6.3. Will you have to rewrite all your OIS policies for the next release?

Best Microsoft MCTS Training, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

This is a valid question, as Opalis Software’s first release of OIS was not compatible with its previous OpalisRobot offering. However, Robot had a different code base than OIS. This is not the case going from OIS 6.3 to Orchestrator 2012, as the underlying engine is not changing, and Microsoft has announced that policies built in OIS (unless they use Legacy objects), along with their data, are usable in Orchestrator. Of course, some things ARE changing; here is a quick look:

New Operator Console. The OIS console is based on Java, requires numerous downloads, and has a fairly painful installation. With Orchestrator, Microsoft has rewritten the console in Silverlight, and it now ships with the core product and uses typical Microsoft installation technology.

New Web Service. The Java-based Opalis web service is replaced by an OData web service. Invoking runbooks through this web service doesn’t seem to be documented yet.

Renaming. Here are some of the terminology changes with Orchestrator 2012:

Foundation objects become standard activities (and objects are now known as activities). These objects have updated, as have the icons for these objects.
Policies renamed to runbooks
Action server renamed to runbook server
Policy Testing Console becomes the Runbook Tester
Operator Console now the Orchestration Console

Changes in Foundation objects (now Standard activities).

Workflow Control category now called Runbook Control
Custom Start now Invoke Data
Publish Policy Data now Return Data
Trigger Policy now Invoke Runbooks
Notification Category – Send Page activity gone
System Category – Purge Event Log activity gone

WSDL gone. System Center Orchestrator 2012 uses a ReST-based Web Service so there is no WSDL. The web service supports OData, enabling easy management of the runtime environment.

Security. Updated cryptography and security model based on Microsoft best practices, allowing for centralized security management.

Operating environment for system components. Orchestrator must be installed on Windows 2008 R2 (SP1 is supported), and requires Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 for its database engine

No Oracle backend support. This should not be much of a surprise, given that Microsoft does not have a history of using Oracle for a database engine. System Center Opalis Integration Server 6.3 Unleashed warns that this was not anticipated to be a supported platform in the next release. And from what we’ve heard, the people who had to support it are happy it’s gone!

Although there is no longer support for Legacy objects – and their use was not recommended even in OIS 6.3 – the engine is still 32-bit and has not been re-architected. Other than some terminology changes, improved installation experience, and new consoles, the product remains fundamentally the same. This means that your policies will continue to work after you export them out of the Opalis environment and into the Orchestrator environment (presuming there are no legacy objects in the policies).

At the moment, Operations Manager 2012 and Orchestrator SCO 2012 work together, although most of the System Center 2012 beta products do not, and will not until MS produces updated IPs for them.

Figure 1 shows the new Orchestrator console, Figure 2 displays the .Net Orchestration Console and Web Service in IIS Manager.

Adobe Edge HTML5 Developer News

Adobe Edge is the newest software package from Adobe which allows anyone to create animations on their website using HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. This tool is supposed to be very simple, as in it allows any user without in-depth HTML5 programming knowledge to add special effects to their website. This is done via a timeline in the software. Users can drag-and-drop graphics onto the design canvas, customize the timeline, and create streamline animated effects. This software is the first showing from Adobe that they are looking into the future and possibly away from solely using Flash for animations and interactive content.

Adobe has been highly criticized about its insistence that Flash is still the standard and their inability to adapt to growing web standards as more people use Apple iOS products which do not support flash. The lack of flash support on those devices has made many web developers reconsider what technology they use to design websites, advertisements, and interactive content. Adobe says that Edge is not a replacement of Flash, but that it is a companion.  Adobe has recently been upgrading their design suite software, such as Dreamweaver, to allow customization via more modern web functions and an easy flash integrator, to keep up with the times.

The Adobe Edge software will allow developers to add animations to existing websites, without causing any distress in the code and requiring a re-working of the source code. This is a solid feature in that it allows anyone who already has a website to simply make it more attractive and noticeable without a major website overhaul. The only current issue is related to how web browsers handle the code. Not every web browser yet fully supports HTML5 and CSS3 in its entirety. One would imagine that by the time Adobe Edge is fully released that these web browsers will be more geared with new code technology.

The largest benefit of Adobe Edge is that by using HTML5 instead of Flash to animate simple effects on web pages, loading times will be reduced. Many Americans still do not have access to high-speed internet, and not all Flash sites offer a standard HTML version. With Adobe Edge’s powerful effects, web developers can use standard web technology to implement them and in turn reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to load a web page. One of the largest causes for bounce-rates on a webpage is that the site never fully loads or loads too slow.

Adobe Edge is set for release sometime during the 2012 year. Currently, Adobe Edge has been released in Beta to anyone who wants to download and try it. The software can be found on Adobe Labs website. Early reviews are extremely positive and the future outlook for the Edge software is looking bright. Adobe Edge Tutorials will be making their appearance once web developers get more experienced with the software and find out how to use it to its fullest potential. One would imagine with the apparent simplicity of the software that Adobe Edge tutorials will allow the most novice of website developers to get their hands dirty and create stunning websites with great eye candy.

Fargo, The Environment, and Microsoft

Hi,

With my last post I was (and still am) incredibly sad that my hometown is having record flooding.  My personal connections run high. The MS campus has been closed for 2 days and will remain closed until it is safe to return.  Right now, that could be a week.   Microsoft Learning has 20 some people in that office.

In my previous life with the Dynamics group,  and with my current MCP role, I am very cognizant that our earth is fragile and between fires in Australia, snowstorms, volcanoes rumbling, just to say the very least —

I wanted to at least try to say is some odd connection that Microsoft is trying to reduce how our carbon footprint.  Not only reduce it but to quote “we are committed to software and technology innovation that helps people and organizations around the world improve the environment”.

So, for those of you who are interested in an ERP solution and want to measure your company’s carbon footprint – Check this out.  Plus, I have to give a bit of shout out for Dynamics…

What would you like to see from the MCP group to help reduce or carbon footprint?  All Ears.  This I always see in tough times is how communities come together.  We, too, can help

Brace for email-attachment malware spree

Malicious email attackers are fine tuning their methods between assaults, security vendor says

A sizeable spike in malicious email attachments is just subsiding, but if history is any indicator, several smaller spikes are about to follow that use even more deceptive means than their predecessors.

Attacks: 10 scariest hacks from Black Hat and Defcon

The recent surge, fueled in large part by a flood of phony messages from UPS, is similar to one observed at the end of March in that the messages urge recipients to open an attachment that releases the malware on victims’ machines, according to Internet security firm Commtouch.

The earlier wave used a wider variety of package-delivery services as senders, including FedEx and DHL, but the latest outbreak employs a wider variety of messages such as, “Dear client, recipient’s address is wrong”, “Dear User, Delivery Confirmation: FAILED”, and “Dear Client, We are not able to delivery [sic] the postal package”, according to the Commtouch blog.

All the messages then instruct the recipient to open the attachment that contains the malware, claiming it is an invoice or a form that needs to be filled out. “This time we see differences in the style of the emails – there is far more variation in the automatically-generated subjects, body and attachment names. Last time all the attachments were “UPS.exe” – this time there are many variations,” says Avi Turiel, director of product marketing at Commtouch in an email.

The attackers will evaluate the success of the attack by finding out how many recipients activated the malware, “Based on the infections vs. malware sent out they will probably try and figure out what they could improve in the next attack,” he says.

The most recent spike saw malicious-attachment email jump from 814 million on Aug. 6 to 15.2 billion on Aug. 12, Turiel says. He says that after the March assault, his company observed a rollercoaster pattern of several, gradually decreasing spikes. “The fading effect is basically a reflection of global email systems learning to reject the emails. The malware writers will perceive this since they will gradually see fewer infections,” he says.

Exam 70-620: Configuring Vista Client

My exam was taken this morning – I was seriously unimpressed with the 70-620.  It covers configuring Vista – or at least the new features, UAC, the Wireless connectivity, presentation settings etc etc.

If this is your very first Microsoft exam then its an easy introduction – if you have any significant history with Microsoft exams you will find it very easy – too easy.

The questions are about which menu option do you choose or which button do you click.  Very little, if any, understanding of the underlying concepts is required to pass this exam.

I thought the NT exams were fairly easy.  Things started to get more challenging with the Windows  2000 and Windows 2003 exams.  This is a complete reversal.

I hope this isn’t setting the standard for exams to come in the Windows 2008 wave of products.

Lesson 2 Review

1. What is the function of an MMC? Why is it necessary to create customized MMCs?

The MMC is a tool used to create, save, and open collections of administrative tools, which are called consoles. The console does not provide management functions itself, but is the program that hosts management applications called snap-ins. You create custom MMCs to perform a unique set of administrative tasks.

2.      What is a snap-in?

Snap-ins are programs used by administrators to manage network services.

3.      What is the function of a console tree?

A console tree displays the hierarchical organization of the snap-ins contained with an MMC.

4.      What are extensions?

Extensions are snap-ins that provide additional administrative functionality to another snap-in.

5.      Which of the following console mode types allows users to create new windows

in the console?

a. Author mode

b. User mode—full access

c. User mode—limited access, multiple window

d. User mode—limited access, single window

The correct answer is a. Author mode allows users to add or remove snap-ins, create new windows in the console, view all portions of the console tree, and save MMCs.
